Tower with eight cage ropes
After power reduction a directional pattern was not necessary anymore. Therfore in December 2003 one of the two tubular masts of 150 m at the transmitter site of the "Rheinsender" (literally transmitter of the river Rhine) in Wolfsheim was dismantled and replaced by a tower. The remaining mast radiates still the MW frequency 1017 kHz with now the maximum power of 100 and 150 kW respectively.
The new tower was built mainly to carry parabolic antennas, VHF-FM antennas and TV-antennas. On the other side the radio station SWR wanted a redundant radiator for the MW frequency 1017 kHz .
For this purpose the grounded tower was provided with a cage antenna.
The cage consists of 8 ropes, which are suspended at a ring shaped cantilever at the height of 80 m.
At the base the nearly vertical cage ropes are combined forming a ring, which is fed by the transmitter power.
